Hole 1 (black)

MDF, acrylic colour, water | 50 × 50 × 95 cm | 2022

At first glance, the glossy black square at the center of the work appears solid — perhaps a painted surface, a slab of resin, or even the inactive screen of a digital device. Only upon closer inspection does its true nature reveal itself: it is water.

This quiet revelation invites a shift in perception. With no visible bottom or ripples to gauge its depth, the surface becomes a mirror of uncertainty. The viewer is left to imagine how deep it goes — or whether depth, in this context, holds any meaning at all.

This ambiguity speaks to the essential character of water: a medium where space dissolves, edges blur, and orientation falters. It evokes both calm and unease, offering a moment of stillness that is equally capable of swallowing us whole. In this indeterminate space, the imagination takes over — buoyed by mystery, suspended between clarity and doubt.
